Some inverter systems require multiple batteries to supply an adequate amount of power storage. Managing the power, storage, switching, and ability to re-charge the batteries can be complicated.
Batteries:
The basic explanation of the two most popular types of batteries used in inverter/12 volt systems are lead acid & absorbed glass mat (AGM).
A lead acid battery is the most economical choice, and with proper maintenance, can offer dependable performance. It is important to monitor and maintain the fluid level, keep corrosion off the posts, clamps, brackets, and wiring. Lead acid batteries do expel a measureable amount of acid gases that can cause issues with surrounding wiring, electrical components, and living/workspace. The lead acid battery will only recharge about half as many times as an AGM battery and are best charged slowly at lower amperage.
A well built, high performance AGM battery initial cost is higher, but it requires no maintenance or fluid replacement. Expeled gasses are minimized and greatly reduce the corossion, potential hazards and damage. A well built AGM battery has approximately double the service life and should look as good upon replacement as it did the day it was installed. AGM batteries will accept a much higher (and faster) charge rate without causing battery damage.
We can help you find the best options for your specific needs.
Power Management Systems:
A faulty charging or power management system can obviously leave you with dead batteries when failing to charge them. But far worse, a faulty charging or power management system can overcharge and damage good or even new batteries, even cause a fire! Without proper technical training and equipment, to check your entire power management, distribution, and storage system, you could damage a new set of batteries.
Changing needs, may require adding additional batteries to extend the time you can run your coach or equipment on inverter power.
Battery Separator Definitions:
Power Gate:
Is a diode in function that only allows power to transfer from the vehicle’s charging system to the auxiliary battery. The vehicle battery and the auxiliary battery never connect in service. This unit is best for protecting sensitive electronic devices and diagnostic equipment drawing power from the auxiliary battery. There is no ability to share power between batteries to start the vehicle or complete a task.
A Battery Isolator Relay:
Is an electro-mechanical relay that joins the two batteries when the vehicle ignition is on for starting the vehicle and to charge both vehicle and auxiliary batteries which typically keeps the batteries separated during a power tool use because the vehicle ignition is turned off separating the batteries and preventing a drain of the vehicle battery. An optional manual override switch can be added to enlist the help from the vehicle battery to complete a brief task in process. But, the engine should not be on during this function because this could damage the alternator/regulator.
Does turning the ignition to “start” cutoff the power to the relay? This would prevent the auxiliary battery from assisting the main battery during starting the vehicle. Would installing a bypass-override switch feed voltage to the accessory circuit at a wrong time?
A Battery Separator:
Is an electro-mechanical relay with a micro processor that joins the two batteries for charging and work task (Bi-directional) use nearly doubling work ability. The separator will interrupt the delivery of power to power tools, inverter, or auxiliary lighting before voltage drops too low to start the vehicle. An optional manual override switch can be installed to allow you to complete a brief task without interruption to charge the batteries. In the event of a drain of the primary battery from headlights on etc., the override switch can assist to start the vehicle as well.
A Multi Battery Isolator:
Is a solid state device that allows charging of the vehicle and auxiliary batteries. It requires hard wiring to the vehicle’s alternator and may affect your vehicle warranty. On 2008 and newer vehicles, the charging system is computer controlled. The alternator is designed to deliver up to 16.3 volts, but when you hard wire the isolator to the 2008 alternator, the alternator goes into a safe “limp” mode, with a maximum delivery of up to only 13.5 volts reducing its efficiency. Also, this system allows no joining of the batteries. The vehicle battery or the auxiliary battery can never assist the other.

Interior Lighting and Switches installed on a Dodge Sprinter
Exterior lighting is very complicated. If you need work lights, how bright? For how long? Telescoping? 12 volt? 110 volt? Is heat an issue?
Safety lighting is even more complicated. Beacons, traffic advisors, light bars, high intensity corner strobes, or individual lights. And then, Halogen or LED lighting.

New obstacle warning products: Have recently blossomed into the commercial and RV markets. Not only can we utilize the audio back-up alarms, the parking assisted beepers with monitors, but also camera systems like those used in the RV industry. One camera fits all isn’t necessarily practical anymore. Choose to see whatever you want to avoid, why limit yourself to the bumper? Mount the camera high enough and you can see and protect the entire rear of the vehicle. What about the front corners of your coach, or even the entry door? See who is there before you open the door! If you have ladders, lighting, or a conduit box on your commercial vehicle, you can watch and protect those also.
Using space provided in the dash by your vehicle manufacturer, and little added cost, you can include a combination back-up camera monitor, navigation and routing system, blue tooth to integrate your hands free cell phone use, USB and SD card inputs, satellite radio, an on screen contact list, and even a private party and business directory assistance. Thanks to declining cost of mobile electronics, we can design a system to fit nearly any budget.
Tire Warning System: Tire pressure and temprature need constant monitoring. Know when tire pressure is falling or if road debris or vehicle parts wedged aginst a tire are building deadly heat. Consider the weight and stress loads your coach or commercial vehicle are exposed to. How about the vehicle or trailer you are towing. Avoid potential injury to yourself and other drivers on the road! Avoid the downtime and expense of potentially thousands in damage caused by a dicenegrating tire.
Vehicle GPS Monitoring: Other available options include packages that allow you to track your vehicle's speed, distance from base, stop places & times, and duration, and even include vehicle condition statistics like engine temperature, oil pressure, exhaust emissions, air bag deployment, and even maintenance due. You can preset limits to alert you via internet, anytime a vehicle in your fleet, or it's use becomes a concern. These systems range from simple plug and play units, to more sophisticated hardwired systems.

Industrial Van, Truck, and Trailer will warranty equipment installations agains defects in workmanship for a period of three years. Installed components are separately warrantied by their manufacturer. Collision repairs have limited lifetime warranty against defects in workmanship. We warranty the finish of painted surfaces against cracking and peeling for three years, with the exception of impact, excessive heat, and/or extreme conditions. Compensation for downtime or replacement vehicle will be at the sole discretion of Industrial Van, Truck, and Trailer.
All electrical installations completed are equal to or exceed industry standards. Electrical installations may still void portions of your manufacturer’s warranty. Industrial Van, Truck, and Trailer's liability is hereby limited to the cost of its goods and services only.
Installing cabinets, shelving, tie-down systems, lifting equipment, racks, cabinets, tool boxes, tools, flooring, insulation, wall coverings, lighting, security window screens, running boards, parts-inventory, utility bodies, or pipe and vise racks, may reduce your vehicle's ability to protect its occupants as originally designed and may adversely affect the handling and braking characteristics and lead to longer stopping distances as well. Industrial Van, Truck, and Trailer will assume no responsibility for the above in first or third party claims.
Your vehicle structure was designed by the manufacturer with safety features to improve its ability to withstand crashes through crumple zones, void space, and the ability to transfer some impact force around occupants.
Your visibility may be compromised.
Be sure to advise your insurance carrier of added equipment and modifications to your vehicle to avoid a possible exclusion of coverage of the added equipment in the event of a collision, fire, or theft.
Your labor cost includes design time, which although not directly billed, can involve three to five hours of qualified designer time, giving you the best possible use of your work space.
Industrial Van, Truck, and Trailer's policy is to write a thorough and comprehensive assessment of the collision damages to, and value of your vehicle. Other collision repair facilities and/or the insurance company responsible for paying for the repair to your vehicle may assess the damage differently. This will not present a problem, nor will it affect the quality of your repairs. Advise us of any difference, and in the spirit of good business and smart negotiating, we will guaranty to resolve the difference to the satisfaction of all parties involved to the best of our ability.
The insurance company, or responsible party, may request some items diagnosed and estimated as damaged, be removed from the estimate. If, during the course of repair, they are found in fact to be damaged as originally estimated, they will be re-included and installed as a special entry intentionally to exclude overlap labor not now applicable. Any addtional cost for realignment will also be charged.
Colormatch and durability of refinish products, especially in Southern California, are not as durable as the original factory finish. Paint manufacturers do their best to formulate products with the best long term value possible, given the constraints of Federal, State, and Local air quality and hazardous materials standards. The original manufacturer of your vehicle is able to control its environment and the escape of hazardous materials and paints to a far greater degree in their mega factories than body shops are able. Beware of those who promise you the impossible.
Backordered or miss-packaged parts, concealed damage to parts, technician health conditions, or failure of paint and materials may affect the completion date of your vehicle. Industrial Van, Truck, and Trailer will assume no financial responsibility for the above.
After an exhaustive search for an efficiently designed and well built coach, to say nothing of the six or seven figure price tag, you know you should settle for nothing less than a trained and qualified professional facility that respects your property and appreciates your trust. You can usually tell within minutes if you are in the right place. There are many similarities between complex high demand motor coach & commercial service vehicle cooling, heating, appliance, electrical, and utility systems.
